action

This evening I was driving back to Friend. The sun had set about 30 minutes prior and it was kind of cloudy so it was pretty much dark. I was driving on hwy 6 in between Crete and Friend as I noticed the most beautiful thing. Across the field to my right was hundreds of fireflies that were lighting... there were so many of them, and they went on for miles like that! Imagine how much action they are all getting! Oh, and did you know that fireflies are the only light source where more than 90% of the energy to make the light is actually put out in light. Light bulbs are inefficient at about 10% of the energy towards light, the rest of the energy is put off in heat.

HxPx

I LOVE rotations! It's so amazing! Yesterday, my first day at Family Practice, I did a full history and physical exam. It was completely amazing. Of course, the doctor came in and did almost the same thing that I did... but that's good reinforcement! I know that I was doing it correctly! Wohoo! I did it!
Today I gave a lady a full knee exam. She had knee pain with internal rotation on McMurrys and I think it might be a meniscal tear... but we sent her to do an MRI.
I love medicine.

Sunday June 10 in Friend

I am now in Friend, NE. While driving here I drove through what I thought would be a tiny town - Crete. But apparently, it's not as small as I imagined! It has a Burger King, a Wal-mart, and two car dealerships!

Friend is not quite as big, but so far the people are friendly. Granted, I've only met two so far, but they're nice. I'm staying at a house, the Dr's house actually, and I am so pleased to know that they have wireless internet. It is so amazing to not have to hold some strange and awkward position closest to the window to pick up wireless. Today, before I left I needed to be sure of how to get to Friend, so I was desperately trying to obtain a signal. I went out to the backyard where Rojane had gotten good signal earlier... no luck. So finally I ended up out on our driveway.

But I want you to know that right now I am sitting on my new bed in Friend. I am comfortable, in air-conditioning, with my feet up, and I still can browse at my whim through the internet. It's beautiful.

I realize that there is a ton of things that I should have blogged about. India and Nepal being most of them, and I'm having quandaries as to what to do about it. Where do I start? Hmm... Perhaps I'll just do an overview... or maybe none at all. I do think I will put more random pictures up as I'm sorting them for a talk at my home church.

~k, well, I really should study something and go to bed. And henceforth starts Clinical Rotations.... more excitement to come!

Nepal

Wow. I love Nepal. When we got off of the plane in Nepal we were greeted with a cool breeze! It was such an amazing change from the horribly humid heat that we had been experiencing for the past week. The hospital that we are at (Sheer Memorial Hospital) is in Banepa and is at a higher elevation than Katmandu (where we were yesterday). Definately a good thing, because we are out of all the pollution from Kadmandu. There is so much pollution that people on the streets actually have face masks - especially the traffic police. We are having a good time and I am learning a lot. This morning I made friends with some folks in the ER and will be able to see more cases. Great experience. Gotta run,
Best wishes to all!
